The most important part of any insurance is claims: how to file the insurance claim and to help you get paid by the insurance company. That said, folks, the school bell has rang and class is in session!
Filing Home Insurance Claim- three basic steps you need to know:
1. Report the incident to your current home insurance company as soon as you suspect it may be a covered claim. And start getting estimates for repair on your own.
2. Your insurance company appoints a “claims adjuster” to evaluate the claim and tell you how much the company will pay toward the claim.
3. If the claim is covered, the insurance company will send you a check less your deductible. (if the claim is not covered, the insurance company will mail a letter with detailed explanation and a copy of your policy showing the applicable portion)
A few more details (if wanted)…
After you have filed a claim with your insurance company, an adjuster will schedule an appointment to visit your home and inspect the damage. During this visit the adjuster will look to calculate how much you’re entitled to receive based on the insurance policy wording and damages. Unfortunately, not all claims result in payments for coverage, some things just are not covered by insurance. During this part of the process, the adjuster will ask detailed questions about the claim circumstance and your answers help move the claim closer to an agreeable settlement.
Once the adjuster completes their file, determines it is covered and payment is owed, they request a check be sent. If you have a mortgage, they will be named on the check along with you. In these situations, contact the mortgage company for direction. Otherwise, you cash the check, hire a contractor and repair your home.
A note of importance: If you have a claim that involves your auto & home from the same “event”, some insurance companies offer what they call “single loss” or “combined” deductible. Just a fancy way of saying that you only have to pay your deductible once for this event and get a settlement for both. Another benefit to having auto & home bundled with the same company. The other benefit to bundling is lower rates, usually. Click here to read an article about shopping for home insurance
